What is the location for this year’s COTAC?

We are excited to host COTAC at Sky Candy Studio, 2400 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702. This studio features ceiling heights of 28 feet and multiple pulley points to set aerial apparatus to your desired height. For the pole portion of COTAC, we will have trussing set to hold the two competition grade stainless poles provided by Lupit.

Where do I fly into?

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Once in Austin, do I need a car to get around?

You will need transportation from the airport to your hotel (Capital Metro, taxi, Uber or Lyft is available). If you wish to explore other areas of Austin, there are rental car companies available at the airport.

How does the seating work for the nightly events? What time do the doors open?

General Admission, Reserved Seating, and VIP Seating are available. Each section is based on a first come, first serve basis. Opening times for doors is 6pm for August 30th and 31st and 5 pm on September 1st.

Can tickets be bought at the door?

Yes, you can, however the entry process will be faster for those who pay in advance, and bring their receipt with I.D.

Is there a one day or a la carte option?

Yes. There are several packages available depending on what events you would like to attend, or if you want a money saving option of full access pass.

I am under 18 and coming COTAC. Can I still attend the event and watch the competition?

Yes, all ages are welcome.

Is there an age limit to attend the event? What is your policy on infants or young children?

All ages are welcome to attend the championships, however, this is a professionally video recorded sporting event so if you have young children that become distracting during the event, we will have to ask you to take them outside.

Can I take photos and video of the performers?

No cameras are allowed but you can take pictures/video with your phone, please #COTAC2018 on your social media posts. You cannot stand while taking photos/video and cannot be impeding someone else's view. No flash please.

Will there be workshops at COTAC?

Yes! We will have a variety of workshops open to all attendees and the general public. Workshop announcements will be made as we get closer to the event.

Can I volunteer at COTAC?

Yes! Volunteer spaces are available and include the following duties: pole cleaning in between pole performances, checking in attendees and contestants to the event, set-up, clean-up, assisting with registration/information desk and other general duties as assigned. Volunteers receive one General Admission Ticket to attend the COTAC when committing to 6 hours over the course of the weekend. You will sign a contract agreeing to volunteer to receive the ticket. When is the deadline for aerial applications?

Feb. 1, 2018 - Submissions open

March 30, 2018 - Early Bird Submission due date

May 1, 2018 - Early Bird Submission notifications sent

June 1, 2018 - Final Submission due date

June 15, 2018 - Final roster solidified, final notifications sent

For Early Bird Submissions both payment and application must be received no later than 11:59pm CST on March 30th, 2018. Any applications received after 12:00am CST on March 31st, 2018 will be considered an standard application and will not be notified early if they are accepted. Aerial contestants will not receive scores or reviews from the aerial online judges. We highly advise you do not wait until the last minute to submit your aerial video!

For Final Submission Deadline both payment and application must be received no later than exactly 11:59 CST on June 1st, 2018. Any applications received at exactly 12:00am CST on June 2nd, 2018 will be disqualified and your application fee will not be returned. Aerial contestants will not receive scores or reviews from the aerial online judges. We highly advise you do not wait until the last minute to submit your video!

When is the deadline for pole applications?

Feb. 26, 2018 - Submissions open

July 31, 2018 - Final Submission due date

For Final Submissions both payment and application must be received no later than 11:59pm CST on July 31, 2018. Any applications received after 12:00am CST on July 31st, 2018 will not be accepted. Competitor spots are first come, first serve. We highly advise you do not wait until the last minute to submit your submission!

When will I find out if I’ve been accepted?

Early bird submission notifications will be sent May 1st, 2018. Final roster is solidified, final notifications will be sent June 15th, 2018. Those who do not qualify will receive email notification before we post our final notifications.

Whats included in the full application fee?

Photos and Videos of your performance and admission to COTAC, parties, and other events.

If I submit to COTAC but do not get in, will I get my submission fee refunded?

No, submission fees are non-refundable as these are used to compensate submission judges for their time as well as cover other submission expenses. However, anyone who submits to COTAC will be able to attend all COTAC shows, socials, and panels for free.

Do doubles need to apply separately?

No. Doubles entries consist of one application fee and one completed application form per team.

Can I compete if I live outside of Texas or the United States?

Texas Residents are welcome to compete in all categories and divisions of the Capital of Texas Aerial Championships. Non Texas and Non U.S. Residents are welcome to compete as well.

Is there an age limit to participate?

Applicants must be 15 years or above to enter the aerial portion of COTAC.

Applicants must be 10 years or above to enter the pole portion of COTAC.

When do I know when I’m performing/when does the day of event schedule get released?

The event schedule will be released after we close registration. It will be emailed out to all performers about a week before the event date.

Are there any restrictions on what type of music I can use?

COTAC doesn't want anyone in the audience to be offended. No vulgar music, radio edits only.

What size props can I have for COTAC

Small props are allowed as a part of your act. If you are unsure if your proposed prop is considered small, email gingersnaps@skycandyaustin.com to verify.

*Not all divisions allow props. Please read the rules to see if your division permits it.

Will there be competitor photos and videos at COTAC?

Yes! Professional photos and videos will be provided to all contestants free of charge.

If I am a finalist will I get a swag bag?

All finalists receive a swag bag

What are the aerial judges looking for?

All aerial performers will be judged on strength, flexibility, musicality, difficulty of moves, versatility (dynamics), and flow (transitions).

What are pole judges looking for?

It depends on your category of pole. Here are the rules for each category:

Does my aerial submission video need to be from a professional show?

No, submission videos may be anything from in-studio practice runs to professional videos, as long as the feature a full act set to music that showcases your range of skills.

Do I have to perform the same routine for the submission video and at the competition?

No, you do not need to submit the same act you would like to perform at COTAC, but it should be a full act, set to music.

Do I need floorwork in my aerial submission video?

There will be 20 seconds of required floorwork as a part of the final act performed at COTAC, but is not necessary in your aerial submission video.

Can I strip down in the aerial portion of COTAC?

COTAC does not have an aerial burlesque category, so please do not incorporate striptease into your act.

Can COTAC provide an aerial apparatus?

Can COTAC provide an aerial apparatus? A: Yes! We have silks, Hammocks, covered ropes, Trapeze, and Lyras of varying size. Please email specific questions to gingersnaps@skycandyaustin.com

Can we bring our own apparatus?

Yes! We will get specifics from you prior to the event to make sure it the apparatus is appropriate for use. Apparatus must be fabricated by a certified welder of good reputation.

Do I have to compete to participate in COTAC as an aerialist?

No! All categories have the option to showcase only if you choose not to compete. Simply mark it on your application.

Is there a time limit on accepted aerial acts for the event?

Yes, acts should be 4 minutes or less.

Can aerialists incorporate flying into their acts?

No, we will not be using live pulley systems, winches, or motors. You may set your apparatus to your desired height and it should stay there throughout your entire act.
